Business Blog Search Traffic Statistics: Channels, Trends, and Benchmarks

Business blog statistics covering search traffic, publishing, distribution, AI discovery, and performance benchmarks from 2024 and 2025 research.

Business blogs remain a common marketing channel, but search visibility is becoming harder to earn. In 2025, organic search still generated more than 1 trillion visits in Semrush’s tracked dataset, while organic search traffic grew 2.38% overall. At the same time, 53% of bloggers said attracting visitors from search engines had become harder in Orbit Media’s 2024 survey.

Business blog adoption and investment

Blogging is established, but it is not universal. HubSpot’s 2025 State of Blogging Report, based on a survey of more than 500 marketers, found that 65% worked at companies that maintained blogs. That makes blog publishing a significant part of the marketing landscape, while also leaving a substantial minority of companies outside the channel.

Among businesses with blogs, publishing frequency varied considerably in the 2025 survey. Daily publishing was reported by 22% of respondents. The largest group, 37%, published two to three times per week, while 30% published weekly. These figures describe the cadence of blog-maintaining businesses; they do not represent all companies.

Respondents also treated blogging as strategically important. Forty-seven percent rated it very important to their broader marketing strategy, and another 46% rated it important. Together, those responses show how widely blogging is connected to broader marketing planning among companies that publish it. Source: HubSpot’s 2025 State of Blogging Report (2025 survey).

Investment levels were spread across several budget bands rather than concentrated in one standard allocation. Twenty-four percent of marketers at blog-producing businesses allocated less than 10% of their marketing budget to blogging. Thirty-one percent allocated 11% to 20%, 25% allocated 21% to 30%, and 18% allocated more than 30%. The survey therefore shows both modest and substantial investment models operating within the same category.

What business blogs are trying to achieve

The most frequently reported objective was brand awareness. HubSpot found that 66% of blog-maintaining businesses published content for that purpose in its 2025 survey. Customer engagement followed at 53%, while 49% published for lead generation. These goals matter when interpreting search traffic: a blog visit may support recognition or engagement even when it does not immediately produce a lead.

SEO-related purposes were reported by 34% of blog-maintaining businesses. Thought leadership was cited by 26%. The figures suggest that search is important, but it is not the only reason companies maintain blogs. A business blog can be used simultaneously as a discovery channel, a relationship channel, and a way to demonstrate expertise.

Pageviews were the most common success measure listed in the same HubSpot research, used by 54% of blog-maintaining businesses. Pageviews can show whether content is being consumed, but they do not by themselves establish search origin, lead quality, or commercial impact. For SEO analysis, pageviews are best considered alongside channel data and conversion measures rather than as a standalone traffic verdict.

Which formats perform best

The 2025 HubSpot survey found that how-to guides performed well for 51% of blog-producing businesses. Industry news performed well for 45%, and case studies for 42%. Encyclopedic articles about concepts in a company’s vertical were cited by 34%, while product listicles were cited by 23%.

Orbit Media’s 2024 Annual Blogger Survey provides a related view of what bloggers create. How-to articles were the most common format, produced by 74% of bloggers. List articles followed at 50%, guides and e-books at 46%, and news and trends articles at 45%. Opinion articles and original research articles were each created by 43%, while interviews were created by 34%.

The two surveys measure different things: HubSpot reports formats that businesses said performed well, while Orbit Media reports formats bloggers created. Their results should not be treated as a direct ranking of search traffic. They do, however, show strong representation for instructional content and continuing use of formats that explain, compare, or document a topic.

Where business blog traffic comes from

Distribution is broader than organic search alone. In HubSpot’s 2025 survey, 83% of businesses that maintained blogs distributed content through social media. Email newsletters and paid ads were each used by 47%. Influencers were used by 33%, organic search by 36%, and paid search by 23%.

Those distribution figures describe the channels businesses used, not the percentage of visits each channel delivered. They also show why a business blog’s total reach cannot be inferred from search rankings alone. Social distribution and email can bring content to existing audiences, while paid channels can provide controlled exposure during a campaign.

When asked how they sourced traffic, 38% of businesses with blogs said they sourced it mostly organically. Twenty-one percent said traffic came primarily through paid avenues, and 36% reported a mostly equal mix of organic and paid avenues. The categories indicate different traffic strategies: some businesses lean toward compounding unpaid discovery, some emphasize paid acquisition, and others balance the two.

For an SEO team, the practical benchmark is not simply whether a blog uses organic search. It is whether organic search has a measurable role within the site’s complete acquisition mix. HubSpot’s figures show that 36% used organic search for distribution, while 38% described their traffic as mostly organic; those are related but distinct questions.

Semrush analyzed billions of web visits across January through December 2025. In that tracked worldwide dataset, total web visits fell 0.43%, from 546.5 billion to 544.2 billion. Organic search traffic nevertheless grew 2.38% overall and represented 16.04% of total traffic. Semrush also reported more than 1 trillion organic search visits in the tracked dataset during 2025.

The annual result varied by channel. Paid search traffic grew 75.84%, referral traffic grew 53.39%, and display advertising traffic grew 62.76%. Organic social traffic declined 8.86%. Organic search declined in 13 of the 17 industries Semrush analyzed, so the 2.38% overall increase does not mean every industry or business blog experienced growth.

These measurements are estimates from Semrush’s tracked dataset, not a census of every website visit. They are useful for describing direction and relative scale, but they should not be copied as a forecast for an individual business blog. AI search and blog discoverability

AI-referred traffic was one of the fastest-growing channels in Semrush’s tracked worldwide dataset, rising 66.02% during 2025. It grew from 462 million to 767 million monthly visits, yet accounted for 0.14% of total traffic in the dataset. The combination is important: a high growth rate can coexist with a small current share when the starting base is relatively limited.

Google AI Mode showed an even larger change in Semrush’s tracked data, increasing from 1,600 visits in January to 38.2 million in December 2025. In December, Google AI Mode represented 0.01% of total traffic in that dataset. These are measured traffic observations for the stated period, not a forecast of future search share.

The potential business value of AI-assisted discovery is not limited to visit volume. Semrush’s cited 2025 research found that 50% of U.S. consumers who use AI tools had made a purchase after using them for research. The same research found that 77% of those U.S. consumers also relied on traditional search during the same decision-making process. AI and conventional search therefore appeared together in the reported decision journey rather than as mutually exclusive channels.

HubSpot’s 2025 survey found that 19% of marketers were building SEO strategies for generative AI search. Among surveyed B2B marketers, 47% noticed increased web traffic from consumers using AI search. The survey results indicate growing attention and reported traffic changes, but they do not establish that every business blog will receive AI referrals.

Business blog performance and search headwinds

Orbit Media’s 2024 Annual Blogger Survey reported that 20% of bloggers said they achieved strong results. The comparison cited in that survey placed the corresponding figure at 30% five years earlier, in 2019. This is a reported comparison between survey periods, not an independently verified trend for every publisher.

Search acquisition was a notable difficulty. Fifty-three percent of bloggers in the 2024 survey said attracting visitors from search engines had become harder. That finding sits beside Semrush’s broader 2025 result that organic search grew 2.38% overall, illustrating why aggregate channel growth and individual publisher experience can diverge.

The available benchmarks point to a practical SEO reading of business blog search traffic. Blogging is widely adopted among surveyed marketers, and how-to content is prominent both in reported performance and publishing behavior. Organic search remains large, with a 16.04% share of Semrush’s tracked traffic and more than 1 trillion tracked visits in 2025. Yet the path to that traffic is competitive: more than half of Orbit Media’s surveyed bloggers said search visitors had become harder to attract, and organic search declined across 13 of 17 analyzed industries.

AI discovery is expanding from a small base, while traditional search remains part of the same reported decision process. For business blogs, the clearest benchmark is therefore not a single traffic percentage. It is the relationship among publishing cadence, content format, distribution mix, organic visibility, and the changing sources through which readers discover information.
